5 "KPIs" that aren't KPIs.

5 "KPIs" that aren't KPIs.
Each one looks right in a scorecard. None of them measures a result.

  1. "Finalize project by 31 December"

A task with a deadline. Track it as % Projects on time.

  1. "# Employees"

A headcount shows what you have, not how well you're doing. Try % Employee turnover or % Positions filled.

  1. "Quality"

A topic with no unit. Measure it: % Defect rate or # Errors.

  1. "$ Budget"

An input, not a result. What you manage is % Budget variance.

  1. "Increase engagement to 85%"

An objective plus a target. The KPI is % Employee engagement. The 85% goes in the Target column.

A KPI measures a result.
Tasks, counts and wishes don't.

Quick test: it starts with $, # or %, and it shows how well you did, not how much you have.

Save this for your next scorecard review.
